What is Epoxy Paint?

The acronym 'DIY' which stands for 'Do It Yourself,' is written in large white chalk letters on a dark green chalkboard. The first letters of each word are vertically aligned to form the acronym 'DIY' with the rest of the words written to the right, creating an instructional or motivational message often associated with crafting or home improvement projects.

The Do-It-Yourself movement is powerful in America and there are plenty of videos on YouTube to prove it. Millions of hits are registered on videos explaining how to do this or that for restoring, improving or coating your concrete. One product you see in stores and on videos is “epoxy paint.” What is it and how does it compare to the epoxy coatings used by California Custom Coatings?

Is it Paint with Epoxy?

First, epoxy paint may be just that – paint with a little epoxy in it. This paint adheres well and may be more weatherproof than ordinary acrylic paint, but it is still just paint. It is a very thin layer of medium with pigment that is brushed onto a surface and provides little protective value and basically no scratch resistance. Paint your garage with this and you have strictly made cosmetic improvements only.

Is it Cheap Epoxy?

Epoxy paint may also be a DIY epoxy coating. Like most products made for the inexperienced or home consumer, they are easier to apply than professional products. This also means that they are of lesser quality.

Epoxy paint goes on easier than professional grade epoxy. That’s because it’s thinner and has less strength, so it is also less viscous and flows more readily. That translates into a thinner coating over your concrete. While it provides some protection and scratch resistance, it is significantly less durable than the coatings applied by California Custom Coatings, especially when compared to our premium topcoats.
