Concrete Unsuited for Epoxy Floors

Close-up view of a jagged crack running through a concrete surface. The crack shows signs of aging and weathering, with small debris accumulated within. This image could indicate structural damage or wear, commonly seen in pavements, sidewalks, or other concrete structures.

While epoxy flooring is a great solution for protecting and beautifying concrete floors, there are also some types of floors that California Custom Coatings will not treat with an epoxy surface. Doing so would waste our customers’ time and money, leaving everybody dissatisfied. If your concrete has any of the following problems, the floor first requires repair and remediation.

Uneven Concrete

Epoxy cannot solve the problem of uneven concrete floors. Here we mean a floor with significant depressions that collect surface water. The solution here is not a thicker application of epoxy. The solution is fixing the uneven floor.

Cracked Concrete

If concrete is cracked due to a shifting foundation, with one side of the cracks higher than the other, the concrete floor first needs to be fixed. Such cracks are failure spots for epoxy flooring. They collect dirt, and are the first spots to chip or peel.

Soft Concrete

If concrete was improperly mixed, cured, laid, or finished (or any combination of these), it may end up without the full strength you expect from this solid material. It’s called soft concrete, and it doesn’t have the necessary strength to lay down epoxy flooring. In these situations, in a short while the epoxy appears to chip. When you examine the broken piece of flooring, however, what you really find is that the epoxy has held on to the concrete just fine. It’s the underlying substrate that has fallen apart. Like uneven and cracked concrete, soft concrete must be repaired before proceeding to lay down any kind of flooring material.
